Metal in interior design and decoration – how to use it? | Bihome Blog

Have you ever wondered why metal appeals to us so much in interiors? Just a dozen or so years ago, it was associated mainly with austere factories or cold offices. And today? Today it rules our living rooms and bedrooms! And I'm not surprised at all. It is incredibly durable, characterful, and when properly set, it can create a brilliant atmosphere. Well, the key word is "properly played". Come on, I'll tell you how to invite metal to your home without turning your apartment into a refrigerator.

Cozy metal? Yes, it can be done!

Listen, the truth is that metal can be capricious. On the one hand, we have brilliant metal coffee tables, chairs with bent frames and minimalist beds that look amazing. On the other hand, if we throw only metal into the room, it will simply become cold and uncomfortable. But a house is supposed to be a home, not a laboratory, right?

How to handle this? The secret is in the contrasts. Metal loves the company of warm materials. If you choose a metal shelf or decorative panels for the wall, be sure to combine them with natural wood, a fluffy carpet or soft pillows. Even such trifles as metal frames for posters, brass handles in cabinets or decorative frogs for curtains can do the job if there is linen or a thickly woven blanket next to it. And it really works!

In what interiors does metal feel best?

Of course, the first association is the industrial and loft style. And rightly so! This is where raw concrete, red brick and black metal create this famous, atmospheric magic. If you dream of such an atmosphere, you certainly don't have to do a general renovation right away. Sometimes one strong accent is enough. How about a gray metal floor-standing shelf or an original table lamp in a deep, saturated cobalt blue? This detail immediately catches the eye and gives the interior a unique, slightly predatory character.

Light that creates atmosphere

And speaking of lamps... Loft lighting is an absolute hit that will probably never go out of fashion. These iconic hanging lamps on long cables, referring to factory halls from the 1950s, look simply amazing. And you don't have to have a five-meter ceiling in an old brewery to afford them!

They will also work great in an ordinary apartment in a block of flats. The trick is to properly adjust the cable length. The idea is that the lampshade should hang exactly at the height that suits us - for example, low above the dining room table. This gives an incredibly intimate, warm light, and the metal lampshade itself becomes the main decoration of the room.

Brick and metal – the perfect duo (but in moderation!)

Okay, let's move on to the classics of the genre, i.e. the combination of metal and red brick. Honestly, this is one of my favorite combinations, but you have to be careful with it. If you line all the walls with raw brick and add metal furniture, the effect may be too heavy and overwhelming. On a daily basis, such strictness can simply be tiring.

Instead, try to do it smarter. Let the brick appear only on one wall or even on a fragment of it - for example behind the sofa or in the TV corner. Such an irregular pattern will immediately make the interior elegant and luxurious, almost hotel-like. And when you put a metal lamp next to it, the whole thing will simply delight.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Will metal furniture scratch my wooden floor?
This is a common concern, but it's very easy to deal with! Just glue the furniture legs with special felt or silicone pads. They are practically invisible and your dance floor will be completely safe.

What color of metal should you choose for a small apartment so as not to overwhelm it?
White powder-coated metal, as well as chrome-plated or warm gold-colored elements work great in smaller spaces. They reflect light beautifully, thus optically enlarging the space and are not as visually heavy as matte black.
